Top Ten Turf Tips!

May 11, 2018

Turf laying can be expensive, especially if it goes wrong. We caught up with our talented turf team to put together 10 top turf tips, to help you get it right first time!

1: PREPARE THE SOIL

During the hot weather months, we advise laying turf as soon as it arrives. Preparing the soil beforehand means that the area Is ready to be turfed straight away!

2: ALWAYS MEASURE TWICE

There’s nothing more frustrating than ordering the turf and it being a couple of rolls short when it arrives. Measure the area, then measure again to be sure.

3: ALLOW FOR TRIMMING

Despite all the measuring, allow around 5-10% extra for trimming. If you have a more complicated or curvy lawn, then you’ll need a little extra turf for when you trim it to fit.

4: ORDER THE BEST QUALITY

It goes without saying, order the best quality turf that you can afford! Better quality turf is easier to work with and the results really will be worth it.

5: BE PREPARED

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

Make sure you have all of the equipment you need to get going. Here is what we advise: A rake, laying boards, a cap, sunscreen, a drink, edging iron (a sharp knife will suffice), a watering can/hosepipe and, if at all possible, another set of hands!

6: REMEMBER THE PRE-TURF FERTILISER

We know it makes the job a little more expensive, but it will make a difference in the long run.

7: USE LAYING BOARDS

Don’t ruin all of your hard work by leaving dints in your lawn. Use a laying board to spread your weight evenly as you turf.

8: START AT THE BACK, WORK FORWARD

Well, because it makes sense and won’t leave knee imprints on your lawn!

9: DON’T LEAVE SMALL PIECES AT THE EDGE

Small bits and pieces take a while to establish and are usually inclined to dry out and die or get lifted by lawnmowers. Follow these simple steps to prevent this;

  • Lay one strip of turf

  • Bend and curving it to shape

  • Lay the turf at 90 degrees to this strip and trim each turf to size

10: WATER, WATER, WATER

To prevent your turf from shrinking and leaving gaps between pieces, make sure you water your turf on a regular basis in the important first few weeks.
